Canadian Prime Minister and left-wing poster boy Justin Trudeau grip on power is slipping further and further away.
Amid tanking poll numbers and turmoil within his Liberal Party, Trudeau is now under immense pressure to step down as members of his own caucus call on him to resign after nearly a decade at the helm of the Canadian government.
“Time is of the essence, and our Caucus is of the view that it is not tenable for you to remain as the Leader, and that we need to allow for the necessary conversations on transition to take place,” Atlantic Caucus chair Kody Blois recently wrote in a letter to the Prime Minister.
Politico has moredetails:
Canada’s prime minister has also been abandoned by his Atlantic caucus, a group Trudeau’s team considered vital to any hopes it had of winning a fourth term.
The Atlantic Liberals now say it’s in the best interest of the prime minister to resign.
The lawmakers no longer believe Trudeau can beat Pierre Poilievre, a populist conservative who has made massive inroads with Canadians by capitalizing off of a housing and affordability crisis with simple slogans that promise change.
They also warn that Canada could be catapulted toward instability if Trump makes good on his Day 1 promise to slap a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian goods.
A senior Liberal source, who was granted anonymity to speak freely, said the letters won’t rush Trudeau’s reflection. The prime minister is with his family on a British Columbia ski vacation and expected to remain out of office until Jan. 6.
The turmoil within Trudeau’s government is largely a result of Donald Trump’s landslide victory in the 2024 presidential election and his threat to impose tariffs on Canadian goods.
Last month, his Finance Minister Chrystina Freeland resigned from his cabinet over concerns that Trudeau was not doing enough to prevent Trump from doing so.
In her resignation letter, Freeland said the country faces a “grave challenge” from the incoming Trump administration, which she described as “pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including a threat of 25 percent tariffs.”
Meanwhile, many Liberal MP’s are said to be jostling for the opportunity to replace Trudeau, although their tenure as prime minister would likely be short lived.
A general election could be triggered as early as January if Trudeau’s coalition partners topple the minority government when the House of Commons returns from its winter break.
The current favorite to win the next election is Conservative leader Pierre Poilviere, a right-wing populist who would inevitably prove a far better ally of the United States and the incoming Trump administration.
