Amid conservative criticism of the accord, Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) became the first Republican to openly call for Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) removal over the controversial debt-ceiling deal he struck with President Biden. During a House Freedom Caucus conference, Bishop alone backed a resolution ousting McCarthy in light of the deal. The group expressed disapproval and urged colleagues to vote against it.
